What is DNS Propagation?

A DNS server takes a standard domain name based URL such as www.example.com and converts it into the IP address of the web server that hosts the site. The IP address is then used to "find" the website at it's unique "location" on the world wide web.

Each and every Internet provider must maintain a table consisting of this DNS information, and they must update this table by adding new DNS entries and deleting obsolete ones on a regular basis, usually every 24 to 48 hours.

When a webmaster registers a new domain name and updates it with the DNS information for the web server that will host the site, this new DNS entry will "hop" from provider to provider, all around the world. This process is called DNS propagation.

It can take up to 48 hours for your new domain name's DNS entry to finish propagating, and your website will be inaccessible by the domain name until after the process has completed.
